Teaching Philosophy and Approach

Teaching Philosophy and Approach

At Bloom, our teaching philosophy is rooted in adaptive learning. We set the same high expectations for all students and provide tailored support to help each individual achieve these goals. We recognize that success may look different for every student, and our educational methods stay flexible to accommodate these unique pathways. Our approach not only prepares students to excel in public examinations like IGCSEs and A Levels but also enriches their academic journey, ensuring they are well-rounded individuals capable of applying their knowledge practically and creatively.

Interdisciplinary Learning

We prioritize integrating learning across different subjects to foster a deeper understanding of how knowledge and skills are interconnected. This interdisciplinary lens is vital for problem-solving today and necessary for future innovation. For instance, our comprehensive literacy policies cover both Chinese and English instruction, introducing subject-specific vocabularies in every class and explicitly teaching those language elements across the curriculum. This not only enhances the bilingual proficiency but also sharpens critical thinking and communication skills, fundamental for academic excellence in public examinations.

Beyond vocabulary, we extend the integration to writing skills across the curriculum. In English classes, students learn the fundamentals of report writing, which they further develop in Science classes. Similarly, essay writing skills taught in English are refined in History. This cross-pollination of skills ensures that students are well-prepared to articulate their knowledge effectively during exams, contributing to higher performance. Our interdisciplinary approach sharpens critical thinking and communication abilities that are essential for success in any field and encourage students to make meaningful connections in learning.

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is at the heart of our educational approach. We believe in applying classroom skills to real-world contexts, which helps students develop practical problem-solving capabilities and a deep sense of ownership over their learning. For example, students learning about medieval history and historical sources would engage in workshops to practice the art of recording and drawing medieval objects. They then would have the opportunity to apply these newly acquired skills during a field trip to a local museum, where they can explore and document historical artifacts firsthand. This practical application deepens their understanding and retention of academic content, directly benefiting their performance in structured assessments.

Moreover, once students have demonstrated their mastery of the necessary skills, they apply them in meaningful projects at our partner field schools. This hands-on experience allows them to gather important data and insights and even engage in publications, helping them to navigate complex historical landscapes. This not only reinforces their grasp of academic concepts but also significantly boosts their confidence and capability in handling exam questions that require analytical skills and real-world application.

By seamlessly integrating PBL into our curriculum, we not only reinforce concepts and prepare students to excel in public exams, but more importantly, we instill a lifelong love for learning and a robust understanding of how to apply knowledge in various contexts. This approach ensures our students are test-ready and equips them to undertake work that contributes real value to the community. Over time, students develop a sense of purpose and agency that will serve our students well throughout their lives.
